This is a great question! There are so many parts and pieces to planning for your newborn babe that it’s hard to figure out when things need to be sorted out.
Have no fear, we are here to help you.
The best time to organize your newborn session is when you schedule your maternity session. The maternity session and newborn session might not be from the same photographer or portrait studio, but keeping in mind your due date, they are best scheduled during your seventh to eighth month of pregnancy.
There are a few things you need to consider.
- Do you want to have your baby’s pictures taken in the hospital? There is usually a hospital team of photographers that offer this service, but not all hospitals do.
- Do you want to have the birth photographed if you are doing a natural labor? This can be an empowering and exhaustive experience, some people want a record to remember their reactions and when the newly-minted dad faints.
- Do you want to wait until baby is at home to show off the nursery and get photos of your interactions? This can be a comfortable low-stress way to get photos that are meaningful as well as wall portraits for your home.
Do you have any special outfits that you want baby to wear? Or a special blanket that was crafted by their new grandma? This would be the time to take those items out and make sure that all your stuff is packed accordingly. It is easier to remember “first outfits” when they get their own tote bag.
Most of all, remember to relax and enjoy the experience. Scheduling your newborn portraits should not be a stressful experience. Find a photographer you trust, whose portfolio meshes well with your expectations.
